What is our recycling program and how does it differ from donating a vehicle?

The Recycling Program is provided to assist those that wish to dispose of (recycle) their car, boat or vehicle, taking advantage of the free pickup, and who do not wish a tax receipt (or are not qualified for one), and would like some benefit in addition to the free pickup.

Some people do not qualify for a tax deduction so the recycling program provides a good alternative. You can find out general information about qualifications for a tax deduction by donating a vehicle from this web page or by asking the person that prepares your taxes.

The recycling program offers certain benefits based on the value of the vehicle. It is important to note that this program is a for-profit program and persons using this program cannot claim the vehicle donation as a noncash charitable contribution. It is also important to note that the Car Donation Program is a Non-Profit program.

However, if you initially elect to use the Recycling Program and later change your mind and wish to donate the vehicle that can be done.

Many people think that because we call it the "recycling" program that it is used for picking up cars that are junk or "parts only" cars. This is not the case. Both programs have the same criteria for what is accepted and picked up.

You can recycle your car, truck, motorcycle, SUV, golf cart, forklift or any vehicle and elect to use the recycling program (as described above) or receive a tax receipt.

Persons using the recycling program will not receive a tax receipt from a 501 (c) (3) charity.

Why should I recycle?

We have found that the majority of persons that recycle their vehicles or donate their vehicles do so because the vehicle has become a problem to them in one way or another. Hence donating a car or recycling usually solves a problem for the donor.

If the donor cannot benefit from the tax deduction they can still benefit by having the problem picked up and they can benefit by knowing their car donation has helped a child or several children.

OR...one can have the problem picked up and receive another type of benefit using the recycling program. You can view some of these other benefits.

So recycling your car is a good idea.

Whether you donate your car or recycle your car you are benefiting the environment because the car will be picked up.

Each program gives benefits in different ways to the donor and to the environment. Whichever program you use is fine.

When you fill out the online car donation form the last question asks which program you wish to use. So it is all very easy and very fast and simple.

Why do some charities offer a vacation AND a Tax Deduction?

If a charity provides a commodity, for example a vacation package, in exchange for a car or vehicle donation then the tax receipt from that charity must state the fair market value of that commodity (the free vacation) and the fair market value of that commodity must be subtracted from the value of the car donation. In other words your tax deduction will be less.

For example, if your vehicle sells for $1000.00 at auction and your vacation package that you receive has a fair market value of $400.00 you can only deduct $600.00. $1000.00 for the donated car, $400.00 is for the vacation package and $600.00 would be the maximum you could deduct. ($1000.00 - $400.00 = $600.00)

We certainly do not want donors to be shocked be receiving a tax letter that states they have to subtract the fair market value of the vacation from the value of their vehicle.

For more information on this you can view this page: Car Donation Tax Deductions

We are the first charity ever to provide a vacation or other offer, but we did so to assist those individuals that cannot benefit from a tax deduction or would rather have a nice vacation. Thus to be fair to donors and to be ethical within the regulations of the Internal Revenue Service we have two different programs. These programs are totally separate. The charity donation program and the vehicle recycle program.
