General Information
In most states a Certificate of Title is needed in order to transfer ownership (such as in donating a vehicle or in selling a vehicle).
The Certificate of Title is a legal document issued by the State Motor Vehicle Department as proof of ownership of the vehicle. It has the name of the owner(s) of the vehicle.
When a vehicle is sold or donated the donor has to have possession of the actual Certificate of Title and must sign this off and provide it to the charity.
This is the only way to legally transfer ownership of a car or other vehicle.
Different states have different ways to handle the transfer of ownership and the handling of the Title.
If you have any questions we suggest you call the Title Department of the Towing/Auction company that is assigned by the charity to pick up your vehicle as they know the exact requirements in your state and are the best ones to answer any questions.
The following is some information that we have accumulated. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of this information since it does change from time to time, but we hope this will be a guideline for your donation.
We do intend to update this information as we receive it. If you find any information inaccurate please let us know.
NOTE: If you have a title from one state, for example New Hampshire, and your vehicle is being donated in a different state, for example Massachusetts, the governing law is usually the state in which the vehicle is being donated. Thus the Massachusetts law would apply.
Registration
A vehicle registration card is NOT the same as a title. Registration is required yearly in most states. The owner of the vehicle pays a yearly fee to register the vehicle and to receive an updated registration card and sticker.
You click on the state abbreviation for more information about titles for that state (to find information about states that do not need titles for certain vehicles):
