When donating a car it is necessary to transfer ownership. Various states have different regulations on how this is done. This page is a collection of actual references from various state web sites.

1. What vehicles do not need titling in vermont?
The State of Vermont titles all vehicles except:
- Trailers with empty weight of 1,500 lbs. or less
- Motorcycles with engine size smaller than 300 cubic centimeters
- ATV 's/Mopeds
- Tractors with loaded weight 6,099 lbs. or less
2. What do I need to title a new vehicle that has not been priviously titled?
- Manufacturer 's Certificate of Origin properly assigned.
- Bill of Sale may be required for Purchase & Use Tax purposes.
- If vehicle was manufactured in Canada, a New Vehicle Information Statement is necessary.
- Odometer Disclosure Statement required if vehicle is 10 years old or newer (form is available from this Department).
3. Wha do I need to title a used vehicle that has priviously been titled?
- Original previous Certificate of Title assigned to you by all parties on the title and bills of sale as necessary to show complete chain of ownership. All liens must be released.
- Death Certificates and/or probate papers are required when one or more persons are deceased.
- Odometer Disclosure Statement required if vehicle is 10 years old or newer. (form is available from this Department).
4. What water craft need to be titled in Vermont?
The State of Vermont titles vessels that are model year 1989 (or newer) with a length of 16 feet or longer (this includes shuttlecraft).
Exceptions:
- Any vessel which is a canoe, kayak, or similar watercraft designed to be manually propelled or such a vessel equipped with a motor of 10 horsepower or less.
- Any vessel owned by the United States, unless it is registered in this state.
- Any vessel owned by a manufacturer or dealer and held for sale.
- Any vessel owned by a non-resident of this state and not required by law to be registered in this state.
- Any vessel regularly engaged in the interstate transportation of persons or property for which a currently effective certificate of title has been issued in another state.
5. Do snowmobiles need to be titled in Vermont?
The State of Vermont titles snowmobiles that are model year 2004 (or newer).
Exemptions:
There are a few situations that exempt snowmobiles from title requirements in Vermont. These exemptions are:
- Snowmobiles with model years prior to 2004.
- Snowmobiles owned by the United States (federal government) unless they are registered in Vermont.
- Snowmobiles owned by a manufacturer or dealer and held for sale.
- Snowmobiles owned by a nonresident of Vermont whose state of residence does not require a certificate of title for them.
- Snowmobiles owned by a nonresident of Vermont whose state of residence does require a certificate of title for any such snowmobile, and the title has been issued or applied for.
