1. How do I obtain a duplicate Certificate of Ownership (title)?

If there is no lien on the vehicle, you may obtain a duplicate title at any Motor Vehicle Commission agency or Regional Service Center with a proof of identity or by mailing the required documents and fees to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Title Unit, PO Box 017, Trenton, NJ 08666-0017.

In person or by mail, you must

  • present copies of a current registration or insurance ID card.
  • pay a $25 fee payable to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.

If a lien has been satisfied and you receive the title from the lien-holder, you do not need a new title.

If a lien has been satisfied and you want a title without the lien notation or if you never received the title from the lien-holder, the owner must

Mail the application (ISM/SS-52) and copies of the other required documents and the fee to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Title Unit, PO Box 017, Trenton, NJ 08666-0017.

If the lien has not been satisfied and the title is lost, the owner must:

2. What is the difference between a junk title and a salvage title?

A junk title is issued to a "public agency" (police department, municipality, etc.) for junk vehicles found abandoned on roadways. Once a junk title is issued, the vehicle can never be re-titled for use on the road. A salvage title is issued when a vehicle has been declared a total loss (through collision, flood, fire, theft, etc.) by an insurance carrier or owner. The salvage title is necessary in order to dispose of or sell the vehicle to a junkyard or dealer. If a vehicle with a salvage title is repaired and passes inspection, it can be re-titled for use on the road.

3. Can I both title and register by mail?

No. If you are in New Jersey, you must apply at any Motor Vehicle Agency. However, if you are out-of-state, and cannot get to an agency, contact MVC at 609.292.6500 or 888.486.3339 (toll free in New Jersey).

4. What is the difference between a duplicate title and a replacement title?
