1. What is a Title and Registration?
A title is a legal document that shows who owns certain property. In Michigan, motor vehicles, trailer coaches, trailers weighing 2,500 pounds or more empty, off-road vehicles, pickup campers, and watercraft 20 feet and over or with a permanently affixed engine must be titled.
All motor vehicles and trailers used on Michigan roads must be registered and display valid license plates. A registration shows the plate number and what vehicle that plate is registered to. To register a motor vehicle, provide either the previous registration or proof of insurance and ownership documents.
2. I had a Michigan title but now I've lost it. What do I do?
Telephone the Dealer and Driver Support Section at (517) 373-9082 to request a Dealer Application for Replacement of a Lost Michigan Title, Form AR-0184. The completed application must be sent to the Dealer Program Section along with some proof of ownership, such as a copy of the assigned title, auction slip, etc. and RD-108.
3. How do I obtain an Instant Title
Individuals who need to obtain a title may process an application at any Secretary of State branch office. Title applications require proof of vehicle ownership and proper identification. Individuals who have lost an existing Michigan title and need to obtain a duplicate title immediately can take advantage of instant title service at the following branch offices: Shelby-Lakeside, Oak Park, Lansing-Downtown, Lansing-West, Flint-South, Grand Rapids-Northeast, Gaylord and Marquette. In addition to the $15 title fee, there is a $5 instant title fee for this service.
4. How do I change my name on my Title?
Vehicle owners who change their name are encouraged to bring their vehicle title and registration to a Secretary of State branch office to have their name corrected on these documents.
All owners appearing on the face of the title must appear with identification. If an owner cannot appear, they may complete and sign an Appointment of Agent form designating another individual to sign on their behalf. The individual with the name change will need the document that changed their name, or their corrected driver license. The fee for a corrected title is $15. There is no fee to correct the registration.
5. How do I acquire a duplicate Michigan Title when Out-of-State?
If you are a Michigan resident who is temporarily residing outside the state of Michigan and have lost or misplaced your Michigan title of ownership for your vehicle you will need to submit the following:
1. An application for Certificate of Title and Registration (TR-11L) must be completed and signed by the owner of the vehicle.
2. A completed and signed Duplicate Title Questionnaire (BDVR-20).
3. Proof of ownership, such as a previous validated Michigan registration.
4. A security interest may be added by noting it in the proper area of the application (TR-11L). If you are removing a secured interest, DO NOT complete this portion of the application. To remove a secured interest, a termination statement must be submitted with the application.
5. If the duplicate title is to be mailed to an address other than the one shown on the application, a Special Mailing Form (TR-114) will need to be filled out and mailed with the duplicate title application.
6. If a dealer is applying for the duplicate title, it will be necessary to submit a copy of the dealer license and telephone number of the dealership. Also needed is the full name, date of birth and driver license number of the person using the power of attorney. If the person using power of attorney is not the owner shown on the dealer license, verification is needed that the person using power of attorney is an employee and authorized agent of the dealership.
A check or money order in the amount of $15.00, made payable to the “State of Michigan”, must accompany each duplicate title application in order to process the transaction. Please mail your completed forms, proof of ownership, and payment to:
