What type of vehicle must be titled and registered?

Off-road motorcycles and ATVs are titled but are not registered.

Pop-up campers and all other kinds of campers that are pulled behind a vehicle are both titled and registered. Slide-in campers or pop-up campers that are affixed to the vehicle or part of the vehicle are neither titled or registered. Anything that is driven (cars, trucks, RV's, motorcycles, mopeds, motorized bicycles) or anything that is pulled (RT's, pop-ups, 5th wheels, trailers of all kinds and sizes) on the roads is titled and licensed.

How do I apply for a duplicate or lost vehicle title?

A $65 fee and a Duplicate Title application must be submitted stating the reason for the duplicate title request. The original title must have been lost, stolen or mutilated. The application should indicate the exact vehicle identification number and the last license plate number.

How much does a certificate of title cost?

An original, duplicate or corrected title is $65. A salvage certificate is $4. A junking certificate is issued at no cost.

If I want to remove a name from the title due to divorce or death, how do I get title in my name?

You must fill out an Application for Title and mark "corrected title." To remove a name due to divorce, an affirmation from the individual releasing interest in the vehicle and license plate or a complete copy of the divorce decree awarding the vehicle must be submitted with the application for title and/or registration.

To remove a name due to a deceased owner, a certified copy of the death certificate must be submitted. If the estate is being probated, a certified copy of letters of administration or court order must be submitted with the application. More information concerning Corrected Titles and the Deceased.

Detailed questions regarding estates may be directed to the Mail-In Title Audit Section, 626 Howlett Building, Springfield, Illinois 62756.

Can an individual pick up the title in Springfield?
