1. How do I obtain a duplicate TItle?

If your original motor vehicle certificate of title has been lost, stolen, mutilated, or becomes illegible, you should apply for a duplicate title.

If you are living in Colorado, you must:

  1. Apply for a duplicate title at your nearest county motor vehicle office.
  2. You will need to have the vehicle identification number (VIN) and Colorado title number.
  3. If the original title has a lien, the duplicate will be mailed to the lienholder. If the lien has been paid off, you will need to submit a notarized lien release from the lienholder.
  4. The fee for a duplicate title is $8.20.
  5. To apply for a duplicate title that is in someone else's name, you must have a power of attorney from that person.

The duplicate title will void any previously issued Colorado title.

NOTE: To view and print the following forms, you must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software.

If you are living outside Colorado:

  • Use the DR 2539A Duplicate Title Request and Receipt form to obtain a duplicate title from the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division. The fee for a duplicate title is $8.20.

If you are a motor vehicle dealer or you need title history:

  • Use the DR 2539 Title Information Request and Receipt form. Fees for various types of requests are (each request):

    Record Search, $2.20
    Colorado Assigned VIN, $3.50
Title History (per titled owner), $2.20
Certification of Record (each document), $0.50
    Dealer Title, $25.00

2. How do I title a vehicle that I just bought?

If you have recently purchased a vehicle and are a Colorado resident, you will need to make application for Colorado title and vehicle registration. To do so, you will need to take the following documents to the Motor Vehicle office in the county where you live.

  1. The current title or the documents from the dealer properly endorsed by the previous owner.
  2. If you live in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, Pitkin or Weld counties, you must show proof of a Colorado emissions test.
  3. Current and accurate vehicle odometer reading.
  4. If the vehicle was titled in another state, a vehicle identification verification form, (DR 2087) completed by a law enforcement officer, a licensed Colorado motor vehicle dealer or a licensed Colorado emissions testing station will be required.
  5. A bill of sale for sales tax purposes.
  6. Proof of vehicle insurance coverage (insurance card, copy of insurance policy or letter from your insurance company on the company's letterhead paper).
  7. If a lien is to be recorded, an acceptable mortgage document (security agreement) must be provided. The mortgage document must be an original, carbon copy, or a certified copy and must contain the vehicle description (year, make, vehicle identification number or VIN), lienholder's name and address, lien amount, and the owner's signature.

Once you arrive at the county motor vehicle office, you will need to pay the vehicle title fees, registration fees and any applicable sales tax.

Your Colorado title will be mailed to you, if there are no liens filed against the vehicle. If there is a lien, the title will be mailed to the lienholder. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.

3. What do I need to have in order to sell a vehicle?

When you sell your vehicle, you will need to give the following items to the buyer:

  • The Colorado certificate of title which is in your name, (signed and printed) in the sellers area of the title. If the title has more than one name shown as owner, all owners must sign. You will need to fill in the name and address of the buyer at this time.
  • A completed odometer disclosure is required when the vehicle is less than 10 years old.
  • A current emissions inspection certificate is required if the buyer lives in an emissions area.
  • A bill of sale. This must show the buyer 's name(s), purchase price, vehicle identification number, year and make of the vehicle. This must be signed by the seller(s).
  • License plates will remain with the seller. The new buyer may go to their county motor vehicle office, in the county in which they live to obtain a temporary permit. They must present the above documents to the clerk to obtain the temporary permit.

4. How do I request a search of Title information?

To purchase a record other than your own, you must declare your intended use of that record, or you must have the signature of the person in interest authorizing you to inspect the record. The search will provide the vehicle description, the name and address of the owner, and the lien information, if there is a lien on the vehicle.

You will need to:

  1. Complete the following forms:
DR2539 Title Information Request and Receipt
DR2489 Requestor Release and Affidavit of Intended Use
  2. Send your request to the Colorado Title Section, Denver, Colorado 80261.
  3. Your request must include the vehicle identification number (VIN), year and make of the vehicle. If you have the Colorado title number, it will be helpful.
  4. Enclose the $2.20 search fee, payable to the Colorado Department of Revenue. For certified records, submit an additional $.50.

The current title information will be mailed in approximately 2 weeks from receipt of your request.
