It is hard to imagine not having textbooks and written literature in your own language, and add onto that burden, imagine not being able to hear ANY language! Reading and writing spoken languages is based on hearing the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, so if you never heard anything, because you were born deaf, the world of spoken language literature would be as foreign to you as Japanese might be to an English speaking person. And just because you can "see" Japanese, does not mean that you can automatically read it...You need to know Japanese, before your learn to read it well... So being born-Deaf can be compared to being born into a glass cage...You can see everything, and you are just as intelligent as everyone else, but you cannot hear the language being mouthed at you on the outside of the glass cage...very frustrating! |

The SignWriting Literature Project is founded by, and sponsored by, the Center for Sutton Movement Writing, a 501c3 educational non-profit organization located in La Jolla, California. The Center was founded by SignWriting inventor Valerie Sutton in 1974, receiving California tax-exempt status in 1976 & Federal exemption in 1978.
