Ministries that participate in car donation programs should ensure they do not mislead donors by failing to mention that a deduction is available only to donors who file itemized returns.

Responsible car donation programs will include a statement reflecting the fact that the deduction is of value only if the donor itemizes his or her deductions. Deductions are based on the fair market of the automobile, based on its condition on the day of the gift. Release IR-2001-112
