SOUNDS Require listening!!

Most of us are so accustomed to jumping in the car, turning on the radio or favorite CD, keeping the windows up for warmth or to keep cool that the idea of LISTENING to our cars isn’t part of the routine.

Best way to learn

But this IS the best way to learn something might be wrong. Although since most of us haven’t been listening closely probably you’ll only notice sounds after your car has developed a serious problem. And if you’ve never listened to your car, how will you know if it sounds different?

Let’s assume though that you are going to start listening at least for a few minutes every time you drive.

Engine rattles when you speed up

Some mechanics call this a "ping" sound and is more obvious when accelerating hard to take a hill.

The rattle is caused by the mixture exploding before or after it should properly in the combustion chamber.

Easy fix

An easy fix might be a better quality gasoline, not a better grade (octane). Wait till your gas tank is almost empty and then fill up at a station you are certain is reliable.

Overheating

If this doesn’t fix the ping, check to see if your car is overheating. If so, have a mechanic locate the source of this problem.

Timing

At the same time, ask him to check the timing and adjusted as needed.

Ping

While a "ping" isn’t the worst sound and you could live with it, don’t!! The detonation (ping) can cause serious problems to your pistons.
