Light Blue Smoke from the Tailpipe

You might first notice this when you start up your car in the morning. A cloud of light blue smoke in your rear view mirror.

Cause of blue smoke...

This is caused by oil getting into the air-fuel mixture.

When you do see light blue smoke it usually means a major repair.

Don't ignore it, hoping it will get better. Or don't think to yourself, "it was just a colder day".

See your mechanic

Go see your mechanic. It will save you from much costlier repairs down the road.

White Smoke From the Tailpipe

Probably even before noticing the white smoke you’ve found your car overheating or noticed you had to add water and antifreeze more often.

What it means

It means that you have a leaking cylinder-head gasket which is allowing air and fuel into the cooling system.

Fix problem

This problem isn’t so hard to fix.

However, if left too long, the next problem is, i.e. a crack in the cylinder head or the engine block.

These words you do not want to hear: CRACK in ....

Advice

Take your car to the mechanic right away when having to add water or antifreeze often or when you notice white smoke.
