While it doesn’t mean there may be a fire, smoke must not be ignored

Black Smoke from the Tailpipe

Black smoke from the tailpipe can be so slight as to only leave a black spot of soot on the driveway; or just when you start the engine. Or in extreme cases a steady stream of black smoke while driving.

Cause of black smoke

The cause of black smoke is when the mixture of air and fuel flowing through carburetor and into the cylinders is what mechanics call "rich".

Rich Mixture

Although "rich" mixture is needed when the starting a car, when the choke remains closed the mixture stays rich and black smoke is the result.

On a car with fuel injection, it isn’t the choke which remains closed as there isn’t one, but malfunction with the computer.

The computer receives signals telling it the engine is warm or cold.

But with sensors malfunctioning, the computer is getting wrong messages. As a consequence the air-fuel mix is rich when in fact is should be lean.

Having your vehicles emissions tested when you have a tune-up is one way to stay ahead of this problem.
