Smells - Gasoline Odor - Time to Take Action
Gasoline Odor
Regardless of where or when you smell gasoline this is the time to go on high alert. And to take action.
Time to Take Action
If you are on the highway, pull over.
Turn off the car, extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and open the hood.
Cellular Phones
With the latest news about the ringing of cellular phones potentially causing fires, leave your phone turned off.
Look for leak
With the hood open, look carefully for wet gasoline on top of the engine near the spark plugs and fuel-injector hoses or lines. On older cars look at the carburetor and fuel filter areas.
If you find no wet gasoline then go to the rear of the car, checking underneath along the fuel tank. You might see signs of a leak here or if not on the fuel tank, look on the ground.
Temporary Repair
If you do find a hole in the tank, as an emergency stop gap a local auto-supply store will have a temporary fuel-tank repair kit.
But this will sooner rather than later need to be repaired by removing the tank and repairing it.
Call a tow truck
If you have found gasoline leaks it quite possibly could cause a fire if you restart your engine.
Better to call for a tow truck.
WARNING!
A cupful of gasoline can duplicate the force of a stick of dynamite.
Do not ignore the smell of gasoline!
