Automatic transmission
An automatic transmission makes driving less arduous in the stop and go of the city and even possible for some people who are physically challenged.
However, this marvelous device must be respected if it is to last long.
Towing a trailer
Do not tow a trailer regularly without considering a transmission cooler and a heavy-duty radiator. Or using a trailer that is simply too heavy for your car.
Unnecessary wear and tear
Rapid acceleration and sudden stops cause unnecessary wear and tear on an automatic transmission.
Shifting into forward while the car is still rolling backwards is a sure way to overwork an automatic transmission.
And unless its a dire emergency, do not throw your car into reverse in an effort to slow down or stop your car.
Transmission stays in low gear
Problem: Transmission stays in low gear and you find rather than going automatically into the higher gear, it seems to be dragging.
Check the transmission fluid
First thing is to check the transmission fluid level. If its low, add fluid.
Black or smells burnt
If it looks black or smells burnt, you may have serious problems.
Broken cable
Another possibility is the cable which controls the precise point or speed at which the transmission shifts.
This cable may be broken, poorly adjusted or disconnected.
Have your mechanic check.
Check linkage
Before you do costly repairs to your transmission, check for the possibility of the transmission shift selector linkage being disconnected or unaligned.
