Vehicle Donation Helps Woman in Need
March 10, 2008
Life is getting better for Delavan resident Charlene West.
No longer will she have to succumb to public transit nor will she be subjected to walking in inclement weather.
No, she won’t have to endure any of that anymore. Thanks to the car donation from the good people of the Community Action of Rock and Walworth Counties, Mrs. West is the lucky recipient of a ’92 Chevy Cavalier. Community Action is a non-profit charitable organization that has as its goal the elimination of poverty in Rock and Walworth counties.
When asked about the car donation a beaming Mrs. West remarked, “I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never won anything in my life. I thought I was going to faint,”
Who was this generous donor? Community Action Marketing Coordinator Jessica Amplo informed us that the donor was none other than the M&I Bank.
We sat down with Janesville M&I Marketing President Mary Willmer to find out more about their philanthropy and why they had chosen the non-profit Community Action.
“We’ve been proponents of The CA for many years and realize the value that it has. Whereas we had the option to sell the vehicle we chose to give a hand to our fellow man, we knew there are many families in this area that do not have adequate transportation for work, school or just medical visits within the community,’’ she said.
Community Action Case Manager Christie Alonzo commented on this.
“Our primary goal is for our clients to become self-sufficient. Because this is a rural area, it is vital to be able to have a vehicle to get groceries, employment and, in Charlene’s case, a way to get medical care.’’ Alonzo said.
Mrs. West then proceeded to tell us how she came to be without a vehicle in first place and how on a cold winter’s day her trusty ‘92 Honda Civic broke down. And with no funds to repair she was in dire straits.
But that is in the past and presently Mrs. West is thrilled and relieved with her new car donation.
“It was a blessing. It’s wonderful and uses very little gas,” she said.
“I wouldn’t have survived without it, Christie and the Community Action program.”
About Our Program
In emergency situations children are very vulnerable to upset, trauma and harm. A simple cuddly little bear given to a child at times like these can have a marvelous and calming effect. There are police, ambulance and fire officials all over the country that have found this to be true and need and want more bears. We hope you will support this cause by donating your car or any vehicle.
