1. What watercraft are required to be titled in South Carolina?

The following are required to have current title and registration:

  • All motorized boats and watercraft; except exempted vessels;
  • All sailboats are required to be titled
  • All outboard motors five (5) horsepower and greater are required to be titled since July 1, 1974.

2. What watercraft are exempt from titling in South Carolina?

Exempted Vessels - documented vessels, windsurfers, watercraft (canoes, kayak, etc.) propelled only by human power with oars, paddles or similar devices.

Casual Excise Tax - The fee for casual excise tax 5% of the purchase price and has a maximum of $300 if the boat and motor are purchased from same owner. When a boat is purchased as one unit, the casual excise is 5% of the purchase and has a maximum of $300.

The primary document you will need is the Watercraft/Outboard Motor Titling and Registration Application - ( Adobe PDF file - file size 57Kb). Depending upon your situation you may need other documentation as well. The Registration and Titling area lists many scenarios that you should be able to identify with.
