1. What boats must be titled?
Boats greater than 12 feet in length regardless of propulsion means must be titled and registered at a MVC Agency.
Exceptions: ship 's lifeboat, canoe, kayak, inflatable, surfboard, rowing scull, racing shell, tender/dinghy used for direct transportation between a vessel and shore for no other purposes
2. How do I register my boat?
Registration of a boat more than 12 feet in length:
- Visit your local MVC Agency.
- Present acceptable proof of age and identification.
- Complete application for boat registration (form BA-51)
- Present the boat title.
- Pay required registration fee.
3. How do I register my boat. It is 12 feet or less.
To Register a Boat (includes Jet Ski 's and other non titled watercraft) -- 12 feet or less in length:
- Visit your local MVC Agency.
- Present acceptable proof of ownership
- Complete application for boat registration (form BA-51)
- Present
- at least one proof of ownership
Proof of Ownership
- a notarized bill of sale
- a notarized statement of receipt from the seller
- an out-of-state certificate of ownership
- an out-of-state registration certificate
- a certificate of ownership by sworn affidavit (before a New Jersey notary public)
- proof of Social Security number or proof of exemption
- your driver license number (If you don 't have a New Jersey driver license, a number will be created for you.)
- Pay required registration fee.
4. What vessels are exempt from being registered?
Boats and marine equipment that do not have to be registered:
- documented vessels operating in New Jersey waters for less than 180 consecutive days, or not based in New Jersey
- vessels from another country
- public vessels of the United States or of a state or sub-division of the U.S.
- ship 's lifeboats
- non-motorized vessels used exclusively on small lakes and ponds located wholly within private lands
- racing vessels while racing under New Jersey State Marine Police permit
- non-motorized inflatables, surfboards, racing shells, dinghies, canoes, and kayaks
- non-motorized vessels less than 12 feet in length
