1. What boats must be registered?
All boats powered by gasoline, diesel, electricity, or sail must be registered and numbered. Sailboats and personal watercraft are considered boats.
Nonresidents using motorboats and sailing boats that are properly registered in another state may use their boats for up to 60 consecutive days without registering their boats in Kansas. Both in-state and out-of-state boats must have their registration papers on board the vessel at all times. Boats that are required to be registered must be properly registered before they are operated.
2. Where can I find an application form for the registration?
An application form can be obtained at the nearest marine dealer, county clerk's office, or from Department offices. Fill out the application completely and mail it along with the required fee.
3. How old do you have to be to operate a boat in Kansas?
No person 12 through 15 years of age shall operate a personal watercraft unless a person 17 years of age or older is aboard the personal watercraft, or unless they have successfully completed a department approved safe boating course.
No person shall permit another person under 16 years of age to operate the personal watercraft unless that person has met the education requirements.
