A watercraft must be titled in Indiana unless:

- It is used as a ship 's lifeboat
- It was valued at less than $3,000 when new

When you title your watercraft, bring the following documents with you to your local license branch:
For new watercraft,
- manufacturer 's certificate of origin AND

A Manufacturer 's Certificate of Origin or a title issued by the State of Indiana must be either notarized or signed under penalty of perjury.
5. What is a hull identification number?
The hull identification number (HIN) is the unique, permanent 12-digit identification number assigned to a watercraft manufacturer according to U.S. Coast Guard standards. Your watercraft must have a HIN before a title application may be accepted by BMV. Watercraft owners who do not have a valid HIN, should apply at a license branch for an Indiana-assigned HIN. When applying for a HIN, you must present proof of ownership, a side-view photograph of the watercraft and a police inspection report, along with a $10.50 fee.
