1. What Documents are Required for Registration of a Boat?

Federal law requires a hull number on all boats manufactured 1973 or later. The hull number must be given on the application.  If the boat has a "CT" number, (previous Connecticut registration), that number stays with the boat and must be entered on the application. To register, you may visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles branch office or mail your documentation to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Marine Vessel Section
60 State Street
Wethersfield, CT 06161

Below listed are the documents required for the registration of a boat.  However, please be sure to read each scenario so that you will have all the proper documentation based upon where the boat was purchased.

A. Application for Vessel Registration and Certificate of Number or Decal (form B-148)

B. Bill of Sale (form H-31).

C. Proof of payment of Sales and Use Tax:

  • Complete applicable information in Tax Exemptions Section of the Application for Vessel Registration and Certificate of Number or Decal (form B-148).

Boats Purchased from a Dealer

  • A "paid in full" Bill of Sale (form H-31) must be submitted showing amount paid and amount of sales tax collected by the dealer.
  • If purchased from  an out-of-state dealer, a credit of the sales tax paid is allowed. However, the total sales tax must equal the six percent  Connecticut Sales Tax and a receipt must be shown.

Boats Purchased from an Individual

  • A Bill of Sale (form H-31) signed by the seller must be submitted showing amount paid.  At the time of registration a six percent Connecticut sales tax will need to be paid based on the purchase price.
  • If the seller is not the last registered owner, each Bill of Sale (form H-31) must be submitted for each ownership transfer back to the last registered owner.
  • A completed Application for Vessel Registration and Certificate of Number or Decal (form B-148).
  • A letter of explanation if the boat was never registered, as well as a completed Ownership Affidavit (form B-203).

Certificate of Decal

  • A copy of document with the Application for Vessel Registration and Certificate of Number or Decal (form B-148). The document must be current and issued in the name of the applicant.
  • If registered out-of-state, a current copy of the out-of-state registration must be submitted with the Application for Vessel Registration and Certificate of Number or Decal (form B-148).

2. How do I Change my Address for a Boat Registration?

In order to change an address on a boat registration there are two options:

  1. Complete the  Change of Address Card  (form B-58) and mail it to:

    Department of Motor Vehicles
    60 State Street
    Wethersfield, CT 06109
  2. Complete the  Change of Address form online and submit the form electronically.

Note:  A change of address for a boat registration cannot be done over the telephone.

3. How do I get a Duplicate Vessel Registration

A duplicate vessel registration may only be obtained by the owner of the vessel . The fee for obtaining a duplicate is $1.  In order to obtain the duplicate vessel registration, you may visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles branch office with your vessel registration number, or write to the DMV at:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Marine Vessel Section
60 State Street
Wethersfield , CT 06161

In your correspondence please be sure to include:

  • Vessel Registration Number
  • Your name and address
  • Your signature
  • Check or money order made payable to the "DMV" in the amount of $1

Note:   The fee to obtain a copy of an original registration application is $20. This can only be done by mail. Please see address listed above.  A copy of your driver 's license or a photo ID must be submitted with your written request.

4. Are personal watercraft aka Jet Skis required to be registered?

  • Personal watercraft are registered in the same manner as vessels.
